Boron Carbide Powder Applications:
- Boron carbide powder is hot pressed to obtain sintered shapes that are used as sand blasting and water jet cutting machinery nozzles and also as curved or planar ballistic protection plates. For effective hot pressing powder composed of very small particles (<10microns) has to be used for full densification
- Boron carbide is an advanced antioxidant additive for resin bonded and carbon bonded MgO-C and Al2O3-C tiles and castables used in iron and steel smelting arc-furnaces and laddle furnaces. It is mixed into the refractories along with Al and Si powders with excellent anti-oxidation and anti-hydration and anti-spalling properties which results in increased life time due to excellent structural performance. It is generally present in the mixture with percentages varying from %1.0 to %10.0.
- Boron carbide is an excellent lapping and polishing abrasive for materials and structures like silicon carbide, sapphire, ALON (aluminium oxinitrate), spinel (MgAl2O4) and LED displays. It is widely used to polish sapphire surfaces for luxury phones and various electronics displays. It can also be formed into the shape of honing stone for specialty honing applications.
- Boron carbide is a standard material which has been used in specialty nuclear applications as free powder and also as sintered shapes for a long time due to the high thermal neutron absorption cross-section of B10 isotope.
- Boron carbide is a standard raw material used for the production of titanium diboride (TiB2 ).
Application Specific Chemical and Physical Properties:
SINTERED CERAMICS PRODUCTION: For sintering of sand blasting and water jet cutting machinery nozzles or ceramic tiles, boron carbide powder with >%96 purity of the following size distributions can be used: Using Reaction Bonding (RB) method -325# (<44microns) or from F320 to F1000, using Hot Press (HP) method F1000 to F1200. Further chemical specs are available on request (such as Total Boron, Free B, B2O3, Total Carbon, Free Carbon and Iron Impurities)
ANTIOXIDANT ADDITIVE IN REFRACTORIES: To be used in resin or carbon bonded MgO-C (Magnesia Carbon) or Al2O3-C (Alumina Carbon) refractory bricks or slide gates you can typically use -325# (<44microns) boron carbide powder with >%92 or >%95 purity. Further chemical specs are available on request (such as Total Boron, Free B, B2O3, Total Carbon, Free Carbon and Iron Impurities)
FOR LAPPING AND POLISHING: To be used as a free abrasive for sapphire or spinel surface lapping and precious stone polishing, narrow distribtuion powders can be used of the following purity and types (or as per customers requirements): >%96 purity and from F100 to F1200. Further chemical specs are available on request (such as Total Boron, Free B, B2O3, Total Carbon, Free Carbon and Iron Impurities)
ABRASIVE FOR SAND BLASTING: You can use size distribution from (FEPA 42-1:2006) F20 to F100 or as wide distribution grits such as -50#/+60# (between 300-250microns) with >%92 purity. Further chemical specs are available on request (such as Total Boron, Free B, B2O3, Total Carbon, Free Carbon and Iron Impurities)
Size Classification:
The size classification of the boron carbide powder is done according to the FEPA 42-1:2006 and FEPA 42-2:2006 standards. Also large ASTM meshes are used for the classification of wide distributions such as -325# or for between meshes distributions such as -60#/+140#. We can process according to the customers requests.
